Exercise is the Best Medicine

by Brianna McDonald (Accredited Exercise Physiologist)

In times of cave men, we had to walk, run and jump just to survive. Then technology came along and now instead of walking across the room to talk to our co-worker, we send an email. Let’s be honest, the world has changed, but our bodies haven’t. We still need to be active and move.

Have you heard? Exercise is medicine. Let’s look into this shall we.youth-570881_1920

If exercise was a pill, it would be the most prescribed medication in the world.

Why? Because the human body needs to move. Without movement we get slow, sick and can develop any number of diseases.

Here’s some of the most common ones and how exercise can help:

Blood Pressure – As exercise intensity increases so does blood pressure. That’s because we need more oxygen to fuel our muscles. When exercise stops the vessels relax and our blood pressure lowers. Exercise every day and your blood pressure gets lower every time.

Blood Sugars – When we move, the body uses a protein called GLUT-4 to draw glucose into the muscles. For diabetics this means lower blood sugar and less complications

Cholesterol – Exercise helps balance the cholesterol in our blood. This can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

swimmers-79592_1920Osteoporosis – When you exercise your bones increase in density. And strong bones are less likely to fracture.

Arthritis – Strong muscles help to relieve pressure on the joint, maintain stability and prevent further damage.

Low Back Pain – Sitting for long periods can cause our core muscles to switch off. By strengthening these muscles, it supports the spine and may help keep that achy feeling away.

Need more examples? The list is literally endless. Exercise IS medicine. But before going out to exercise make sure you speak to a professional.
