What Is Pilates and Why Is It So Amazing?

As someone who has taught Pilates for a number of years I had come to the belief that Pilates was a brand name that everyone knew of. However the more people I talk to the more I realise that very few people actually know what Pilates is. And if I was to think back a few years before I started teaching it, I really didn’t know much about it either. But if you’re looking to get fit, strong and lean, Pilates is probably the best thing you can do for your body.

What is it?  Pilates is a form of exercises that focuses on improving strength, flexibility and posture. Developed in the 1950’s by Joseph Pilates, the exercise method continues to grow into one that is highly popular and sought after.

What are the benefits? Pilates is most well known for helping develop core strength and stability. Along with feeling stronger Pilates will help you stand taller, increase muscle tone and improve your flexibility. Regular Pilates is great to treat injuries and also helps with weight loss through boosting your metabolism. It really is an all-round exercise that makes you feel amazing.

Who should do it? Those wanting a leaner, more toned body. Those with injuries like back pain, neck pain and shoulder issues. Athletes looking to rehab or prevent an injury. Those wanting to simply get fit, strong and healthy.

What can you expect? The majority of Pilates exercises take place lying down on a mat. Movements are slow and controlled and tailored to each individual’s fitness level. There is a focus on core strength, but we also include upper/lower body exercises and stretching. To see what a class looks like you can take a look at our Pilates video here.
